Details for 2024 Spring Sports

Warrior Nation -

Spring sports for 2024 are almost  here!  The purpose of this email is to make sure you have the introductory information leading up to the first day of spring sports for both middle and high school on Monday, February 26th.

As you have heard, we have completed our  “Alumni Field” project, and we look forward to playing our first games on campus shortly.  Mark your calendar for the grand opening of Alumni Field on Saturday, March 23rd.  Our girls soccer team will play  at noon, and our boys lacrosse team will follow at 2:30pm.  Our field dedication ceremony will take place in between the games.   Food trucks will be on site as well as other activities.  We invite all students, parents, alumni and friends to come and celebrate with us.

Here is all the information you need to get prepared spring sports:

Middle School Sports
Middle school sports for the spring will start on Monday, February 26th, and as always, the first few days will serve to get athletes acclimated and ready to go.   Students will find out more about spring sports and meet their coaches during their activity period on the 26th, and more specific information will be provided then.

High School Sports
High school spring sports will also begin on Monday, the 26th.   Athletes should reach out to head coaches to get specific information regarding times and dates of practice for each sport. Information for each team is listed below:

  • Girls Soccer – Head coach Doug Haas can be reached at dhaas@wilmingtonchristian.org.

  • Boys/Girls Outdoor Track – Head coach Mike Malone can be  reached at mmalone@wilmingtonchristian.org.

  • Boys Lacrosse – Head coach Micah Norcross can be reached at mnorcross@wilmingtonchristian.org.

There is a spring sports kickoff meeting for high school parents and athletes on Monday,  March 4th,  beginning at 5:30pm.  We will have a catered dinner, fellowship, timely updates, and each coach will have their parent meeting as well.  More information will be coming once the season officially begins.

DIAA Physicals
On a yearly basis, in accordance with DIAA policy, all student athletes, both middle school and high school, wishing to participate in athletics at any Delaware high school must submit a new, completed DIAA physical form that was signed off by a licensed medical provider on or after April 1, 2023. No exceptions can be made..  Our athletic trainer, Jessica Thompson will handle this process for us, and she can be reached at jthompson@wilmingtonchristian.org.  DIAA physical forms are 7 pages long, and can be found in the “links” section of this website.  Athletes who did not play a fall or winter sport must have the physical completed and returned to Jessica Thompson in order to participate on the 27th

Athlete Code of Conduct/Spectator Expectations
Every season, athletes and parents are required to review and sign the Athlete Code of Conduct (The Code).  This document provides principles and values that guide our program, and sets clear expectations for how we compete as Christians.  The Code also points toward the Parent/Athlete manual.  This manual serves as a more detailed set of policies and procedures for a number of different scenarios that can arise during a season.

One key part of our expectations are related to parent/spectator behavior.  Section 3 of The Code is called "Sportsmanship" and I encourage all of you to read it.  Recently, across the country, and in Delaware, games have been impacted by inappropriate spectator behavior.  I couldn't be more proud of the genuine interest in the WCS athletic program that I feel every day.  I believe we have a group of parents that are significantly invested in what we are doing, and for that I am truly thankful.  With that comes responsibility.  I request that we commit to letting the coaches coach, and the officials officiate.  Please honor the 24 hour rule, and do not approach coaches about the game until the next day, if at all.  I request that we refrain from providing feedback to the officials during the game.  We face a unique situation with officials in our state, in that  they are often understaffed and often under paid.  Our coaches have a mechanism to provide feedback about the officials, and we need to let them follow that process.  As a parent, and a coach, I know that this can be difficult.  But we are called to a higher standard.  We represent  our families, our school, and our faith everytime we attend a game.   Let's choose to represent well.

Conclusion
Thanks for your continued commitment to the truth that as Christians we are called to  compete with tenacity, constantly pursue excellence, and honor God while doing it. The time that we spend with the athletes throughout the year is critical to their development individually, and we know the lessons learned on the fields and courts bear fruit well beyond their high school years. Our goal as a program is to be constantly pursuing excellence. You should expect our entire staff, from me, to the coaches, to our athletic trainer to be better this year than we were last year, in every single dimension.  Just as in the same way we will always expect our athletes to constantly be striving to fulfill their potential.  One of the great things that is happening at WCS is that we are establishing a strong culture.  A culture of faith.  A culture of relentlessly preparing during practice.  A culture of competing well in the biggest games.  And, a culture of family.   Thanks for your support so far this year, and I look forward to seeing you at Alumni Field soon.

Our Core Values

Our Athletic Culture Team (ACT) has done a great job over the past few months defining our core values, and painting a picture of what we stand for.   What you see below is the outcome of their work.
